Paint+ livens up famous Sydney hotel

Scenic artist Mike O’Kane chose Paint+ for a mural he did at Sydney's well-known Shelbourne Hotel.

“I use Paint+ for my work on movies. I like working with it, so it was the obvious choice for the mural too,” says Mike.

“As the original art work I was emulating had a very loose and brushy feel to it, I needed a transparent feel to the finished work. Combining Paint+ clear matt glaze with Scenic Flat enabled me achieve the required transparency, as well as the predictability needed to build the work layer by layer.”

With many major international movies shot in Australia, Mike regularly works on major releases. In the last few years he was head scenic artist for Superman Returns, the action comedy Fool's Gold with Matthey McConaughy and Kate Hudson and the adventure comedy Nim's Island, with Jodie Foster and Abigail Breslin.

In between the movie projects, Mike puts his artistic talent to other uses. Architect Dale Jones-Evans, who is in charge of the redecoration of the Shelbourne Hotel, contacted Mike to do a massive mural – 30m wide and 3m high – spanning interior as well as exterior settings.

“Dale gave me an example of the style he wanted and left me to apply it across the entire mural.”

NZ ecolabelling among the world's best

The Environmental Choice labelling achieved by all PaintPlus products is among the best in the world, according to a global study commissioned by the British government.

The UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has mapped and analysed worldwide standards and methods used for measuring environmental sustainability of products.

Considering 207 standards, databases and product lists globally, the research looked at the robustness of standards used for measuring sustainability, the range of criteria applied, and the methodology used. The study scored organisations for open and thorough consultation in developing standards, the frequency of updating them, backing by government, the strength of evidence collected for assessments, and the use of whole-of-lifecycle considerations.

The report says Environmental Choice, which is initiated and endorsed by the New Zealand Government, provides a credible and independent guide across a range of different product types, for consumers who want to purchase products with reduced environment impacts. It is one of the international best practice standards to which national labelling schemes should be referred.

"It is heartening for us to know that all our products meet some of the highest standards for environmental sustainability in the world," says John Warman, co-founder of PaintPlus.

Quality not compromised by cost

Paint+ does not allow cost cutting to get in the way of quality.

“When we want to make a product, we get the best ingredients and that’s it,” says co-owner Jim Beattie. “We don’t skimp on costs.”

However, the company still delivers its paint at exceptional rates. "This is because our customers pay for what they get in the can, not for fancy offices!"

He says Paint+ focuses on business to business selling, avoiding the high costs associated with selling to the public.

Accreditation Proves World Leader

The UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has mapped and analysed worldwide standards and methods used for measuring environmental sustainability of products. The report was prepared by British-based international consultancy Environmental Resources Management Ltd. It aims to evaluate and present to the British Government the world’s best practice organisations in th certification of sustainability, as an aid to government procurement policy.

Considering 207 standards, databases and product lists globally, the reasearch looked at the robustness of standards used for measuring sustainability, the range of criteria applied, and the methodology used. Those agenices with standards considered “ambitious” enough to warrant possible adoption by the UK were grouped as "Class 1".

The report states:
"The most significant are the FSC Nordic Swan and Environmental Choice New Zealand, which serves as international best practice standards to which national labelling schemes should be referred".

"Initiated and endorsed by the New Zealand Government, Environmental Choice provides a credible and independent guide across a range of different product types, consumers who want to purchase products with reduced environmental impacts".

Only Paint+ is eco-friendly from top to bottom

Paint+ is the only New Zealand paint company who can use the Environmental Choice label on all their products.

All Paint+ products have been assessed by the New Zealand Ecolabelling Trust and have been found to comply with the requirements of the Environmental Choice specification.

Paint+ has been making only environmentally friendly products since the company was founded over ten years ago.

"For Paint+, being environmentally friendly is not a marketing ploy. It is the reason for our existence," says Paint+ co-owner John Warman.

Paint+ means more money for hotels, hospitals

Enterprises that rely on human occupancy of rooms for revenue, for instance hotels and hospitals, find that using PaintPlus boosts their bottom line.

Paint+ dries fast, doesn't have the odour issues of paints and doesn't pose a health risk through the release of high levels of volatile organic compounds.

"Our hotel customers are able to paint a room and put guests into it that same night," says Paint+ co-owner Jim Beattie.

"That is a fabulous return on investment for them. It's like the painter was never there. If they had used other paint, the total cost of the exercise would have to include lost revenue, which isn’t an issue if they use Paint+."

Jim says many Paint+ clients find that the added bed-nights they gain by using Paint+ completely offsets the cost of the painting.

Hospitals, where bed occupancy is equally crucial, also benefit. The North Shore Hospital has used Paint+ for many years and hasn’t had a single odour complaint or respiratory issue in all that time.

"Before they started using our paint, they had numerous staff complaints whenever there was painting, even nurses going home sick."

Another great benefit found by North Shore Hospital is that painting now takes half the time it used to take, because Paint+ dries so quickly.

No inferior trade line

The reality of the paint industry is that some manufacturers offer a secondary trade line, which is often the one that actually gets used even if the original specification was based on the top-tier product.

With Paint+ there are no such issues. "We only make one quality – the best," says co-owner Jim Beattie. "If an architect, interior designer or building owner specifies Paint+, there is no chance they’ll end up with an inferior product."

Standing the scrub-room test

The exceptional hardwearing quality of Paint+ came to the fore when it was used in the theatre scrub room at Greenlane Hospital.

The walls in these rooms are regularly washed down with antibacterial agents, so the paint has to withstand a great deal of rubbing and scrubbing.

"They've tried many products over the years and none lasted more than three months," says Paint+ co-owner Jim Beattie. "We painted 11 of the operating theatre scrub rooms in Paint+ and when the building was demolished three years later, that original coat was still on the wall."

To test the durability of the paint, Paint+ invested in the scrub test equipment used by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). All Paint+ products are tested for durability before being released to the market.

"It's a matter of goodness in, goodness out," says John Warman, co-owner of Paint+.

"We only use the best quality ingredients and we don't disguise anything about our paints. We don't use masking agents, what you get is the pure raw material we put in. The quality is evident."
